cox graae + spack architects along with SHW Group and Anacostia Architect James R. Jordan, AIA / Millennium Design Architects came together to develop a conceptual design for the new Ballou Senior High School. The District of Columbia’s Department of General Services launched a design competition to find an architect who could transform the cramped, dated, cumbersome and inefficient school into a progressive, dynamic and sustainable learning facility to serve the unique needs of Washington DC’s Ward 8. The concept included a rich fabric of core academic and arts functions integrated with continuing education programs, vocational training, special needs education, athletic, performing and visual arts as well as community facilities and partnerships. The new 291,990 sqft facility will accommodate 1,400 daytime students and an additional 900 part-time evening pupils.
