A new Physical Education Center replaced the outmoded 1930s campus gymnasium, allowing the old structure to be adapted for re-use as a new 500-seat facility for campus assemblies, performances and liturgical gatherings. The old gym floor was replaced with raked seating and an exterior wall was removed to allow a new two-level stage house containing rehearsal space and mechanical equipment. Wood panels line the brick interior walls, but most of the original gym structure, including arched windows and steel roof trusses, were restored and left in place to provide a comfortable visual and acoustic environment. A new, large arched stained glass window serves as the stage backdrop for chapel services, allowing filtered natural light into the sp ace. The Chapel / Performing Arts Center was the third stage of a six phase campus master plan.
